Hellfire Pass Establishes a New Spirit House at the Walking Trail

The Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre has established a new spirit house at the entrance to the Hellfire Pass walking trail, following a traditional Thai religious ceremony held at the site.

The new spirit house is part of the Centre’s ongoing landscape management and maintenance efforts. The previous spirit house had become severely damaged due to prolonged exposure to heavy rainfall and ageing, and a replacement was therefore installed to maintain the cultural character and traditions associated with the site.

Spirit houses, known in Thai as san phra phum or san chao thi, are a longstanding part of Thai culture and can commonly be found near homes, businesses and other places. Traditionally, a small house is provided as a symbolic dwelling for guardian spirits, accompanied by offerings as a gesture of respect and to seek protection and well-being for the surrounding area.
The establishment of the new spirit house reflects the Centre’s respect for local Thai customs and beliefs, while recognising the cultural traditions connected with the landscape. As a place of remembrance and historical significance, Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre seeks to care for not only its historical features and visitor facilities, but also the cultural character and traditions of the local area.

The new spirit house now stands at the entrance to the walking trail, marking the beginning of the journey through Hellfire Pass and serving as a continuation of a long-standing local tradition.
